Meeting in May

Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels” at General Meeting

TUESDAY, MAY 20: Phyllis Croce from MSD (Metropolitan Sewer District) will present a timely program on improving water quality, addressing runoff, and supporting biodiversity through the use of rain gardens and rain barrels at our monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 20th, 7 PM at the Clifton Center.

When sized and constructed properly, rain gardens are able to handle the amount of storm water produced in an average event. One inch of rain, running off from an average 1,500 square foot house=935 gallons of water, filling 16 rain barrels!

Phyllis is trained as a landscape architect and for the last 25 years has been devoted to conservation and restoration of native landscapes. Phyllis will include information about landscape design and native plants as well as rain garden and rain barrel solutions. Come and learn how you can make a difference in our water quality as well as improving the appearance of your home and yard. Our programs are free and open to the public.

Social Dinner

This month we’ll gather at Saffron’s Restaurant on Friday, May 23 @ 7 PM for authentic Persian cuisine. Please RSVP to Barbara Hedspeth, 502-896-0242, or Becky Hunger at 502-454-4595.

Robinson Forest
The Cumberland Chapter of Sierra Club has expressed it's opposition to Dr. Scott Smith, Dean of UK's College of Agriculture and to UK President Lee Todd regarding UK's proposal to clear-cut 800 acres of Robinson Forest in eastern Kentucky. The biodiversity, distinctive ecosystem and clear reference watershed of Robinson Forest deserve protection, not destruction. We encourage you to contact Dr. Scott Smith and President Lee Todd and express your concerns regarding their plans for Robinson Forest.

Changing 5 conventional light bulbs in your kitchen/living area to the more efficient compact flourescent type would make a noticeable difference in your energy bill. According to EPA if every US home changed 5 bulbs in high traffic areas, it would prevent enough emissions to equal tailpipe gases from 8 million cars!

Kentucky Rails to Trails
There is a new Kentucky Rails to Trails office. We hope to explore new ways to work together. Check them out at http://www.railstotrails.org.
